A curious-being
I’m Institute of Marketing qualified and I’ve worked client-side and in agencies. I’m a curious being – in a good way. I like to dig around and look for why something is special and how best to communicate it. I do that by questioning briefs, interviewing clients, meeting customers, visiting production sites, quizzing the data boffins – anything that helps me to get a fresh angle on what you’re trying to say.
Supporting clients direct
I work with lots of direct clients, from digi-start-ups with big ideas, to huge international companies with strict brand guidelines and layers of approval. For some clients I work as a kind of outsource marketing manager, proactively driving communications and content. I’m well-connected in the creative world, so I can also produce content, bringing in designers, videographers, animators and website builders as required.
Working with agencies
I built an agency from zero to £7m over 10 years, so I understand what it’s like to be constantly evaluated by your last piece of work. I bring strategic value, as well as content. I can work on my own, or with your creatives. I’m happy to work direct with your clients, if that helps you to get things moving. And I always understand that you need to make a margin.
What I do outside of work
I’m married to Carol and we live in central Brighton. We have three daughters who are all out there exploring what’s next.
It’s all about people and experiences for me. I like to say yes to new things and see where they take me. This year that’s been exploring Atlantic coast Portugal with the family. Tearing up the South Downs on electric mountain bikes. Walking in Sicily. Sailing a trimaran off the Isle of Wight. Petanque on Brighton seafront. Mackerel fishing at dawn. And let’s face it, way too many pubs (because I find it hard to say no).
I even have a monthly ‘First Thirstday’ event with friends, where one of you has to take the other two to pubs they’ve never been to before. Quite a challenge, given I’ve lived in Brighton for 30 years, but we have fun trying.
